Residents draw to the attention of Council:

The Magnetic Island community is requesting the establishment of a fully fenced dog park. Despite repeated petitions, there has been no progress. The ongoing demand from residents and visitors demonstrates the necessity for a dedicated space where dogs can exercise, socialize, and play freely. Given that 76% of the island is designated as National Park, which we value and are committed to preserving, there are limited suitable areas for exercising and socializing dogs. A fenced dog park would minimize the impact on the island's natural environment. Beaches are not a viable alternative due to their shared use, environmental concerns such as turtle nesting sites, and the lack of natural boundaries to ensure control and safety. A fenced dog park would keep dogs out of other public spaces, preventing potential discomfort for non-dog owners in other public spaces. Under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA), public amenities must be inclusive and avoid discrimination against individuals with disabilities. The absence of a dog park or accessible alternative impacts residents with limited mobility who are unable to exercise their dogs effectively. The consistent requests underscores that a dog park is not just a convenience but a critical amenity for the well-being of dogs, their owners, and the wider Magnetic Island community. It’s time for the council to acknowledge and act on this demonstrated need by providing a safe, appropriate space for dogs and their owners.

We the undersigned request that Council give consideration to:

A fully fenced dog park on Magnetic Island is a long-overdue community need that has been repeatedly raised with council through petitions over several years. Despite these efforts, no progress has been made. We urge the Council to prioritize this long-standing community request and take action to identify and develop a suitable location for a dog park that meets the needs of residents, visitors, and their pets while maintaining harmony with the island’s natural environment and shared public spaces.
